Don’t let that cold bring your game down. There’s never a good time for that!
When I get a cold, I like to take the natural route in the healing process. A homeopathic approach is a great alternative to conventional medicine for common illnesses like colds and flus.
– Drink Honey Lemon Ginger Tea
Honey has a soothing effect so it helps with sore throats and suppressing coughs. Lemon is strong in vitamin C and antioxidants, reducing inflammation and boosting your immune system. Combine this with ginger which will combat symptoms like nausea, upset stomachs, and cold sweats.
Combine the following in a cup for hot beverages:
1.5 teaspoon honey + (3) 1/4 inch slices of lemon + (1) 1/4 inch slice of ginger
Pour 1 cup hot water over ingredients
Steep for at least 5 minutes, or to your liking
– Coconut Oil Vapor Rub
Congestion sucks (no pun intended). Commercial vapor rubs may contain parabens and petrolatum (derived from crude oil, the same stuff that goes into cars. Yikes!), so why not create a rub where you can identify all the ingredients that go in it?
1/2 cup coconut oil (preferably organic unrefined) + 10-15 drops peppermint essential oil + 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil + 5 drops lemon essential oil
1. Melt the coconut oil into a liquid state. Place it in a glass container and then in a tub of hot water. It melts at at 76-78o F. Microwaving, melting it on the stove, or any direct heat can damage its good fats.
2. Let the oil cool for 5 minutes before mixing in all the essential oils – adding the essential oils to hot coconut oil will damage its healing properties
3. Mix and let it harden at room temperature or put in the fridge for 45 minutes to an hour
- Peppermint essential oil has a cooling sensation due to its menthol content that helps clear respiratory issues (do not use on babies or young children)
- Eucalyptus essential oil has antiseptic, anti-viral and anti-flammatory qualities (do not use on babies younger than 2 months)
- Lemon essential oil stimulates the immune system (safe for children 2+ years)
– Gargle Salt Water
It’s not tasty but it’ll reduce swelling, loosen mucus, and kill bacteria in your throat.
Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt into 8 fluid ounces of warm water and gargle.
– Vitamin C
The recommended daily dosage for adults is 65 to 90 milligrams (mg) a day, with an upper limit is 2,000 mg a day. Since it’s water soluble, there is little chance of overdosing. Vitamin C can shorten the period of time one is sick.
This may seem like common sense but trying to push through a cold without getting adequate rest will just elongate the time you’re sick.
